A wiki is basically a content management system. A CMS is a software application used to create, edit, manage and publish content in an organized way. Say you had a newsletter that is updated weekly. A CMS allows you to set up a template with a header, logo, date, etc. then a space where content will go. Thus, every week, you have to recreate the newsletter from scratch, you can only update the content. A CMS can fill in the date and other information automatically, publish, archive, allow you to browse, edit, and all sorts of other functions.
Most websites are designed with a CMS, and a great example of this blog. Simply enter in the text, click publish, and everything else is taken care of.
Thus, a wiki is a website (or pages) with this configuration specifically allows anyone to edit or add content. The best known wiki is the Wikipedia website, "the free encyclopedia that anyone can edit." The advantage of a wiki is that two minds are large one-is an effort collaboration.
The most obvious benefit of a wiki is that they are a great source of free information. There are literally thousands of wikis out there, both public and private, large and small, general or very, very specific. Wikipedia is an example of a wiki very large public in general. Initially based on the need to provide more customer support, which created a wiki for their customers. Includes company information, a glossary of terms and FAQs. It is not only a valuable resource for customers, but since anyone can edit or add to it, customers can share information and provide feedback. The wiki is another avenue for the company to communicate with customers and vice versa, and also connects customers to customers to create an interactive community. (An added benefit is that this strategy works as a search engine marketing, and they are providing relevant content related to your industry frequently updated.)
While wiki can be a funny word, is nothing to laugh. In this "information age" the wiki is a revolutionary way to share content and create communities. People have been riding the wave wiki some time, and companies are starting to pick it up. In a world of wikis, you never have to say "I do not know" again.
